Test your first federated post.

Verify follows, delivery, formatting, and replies from a reader’s point of view.

Keep a record as you test.

Save delivery and reply observations, download a report, and carry successful checks into your launch checklist.

Before you begin

  • A configured public publication profile.
  • An account on a different server, or a trusted reader who can help.
  • A small piece of content you are comfortable making public.
  1. 01

    Prepare two points of view

Keep your publication and the receiving account open so you can compare them. Use a different server for the receiving account to test communication between servers.

  2. 02

    Make the follow first

From the receiving account, search for the full publication handle and follow it. Approve the request if required. Confirm it is accepted before publishing the test.

  3. 03

    Publish a small, public test

Create a new post with a distinctive phrase, one useful link, and optionally an image with alt text. Record its original URL and publication time. Avoid using subscriber-only content as the test.

  4. 04

    Compare the receiving view

Look in the reader’s home feed and the publication’s profile. Open the link and inspect the image, if present. Record whether text, formatting, and descriptions arrive as intended.

  5. 05

    Check a reply separately

Reply from the receiving account and look for the response in your publication’s notifications or comments. Review moderation settings if it does not appear.

  6. 06

    Keep a useful record

Note the two handles, software used, post URL, and outcome. This makes a later regression easier to diagnose. Share your handle after verifying the interactions you plan to offer.

What success looks like

A new post arrives at the receiving account with usable content, and you know whether replies reach your publication.
